It’s Aguero to the rescue

Mahrez shot straight at Anthony Lopes. Just moments later Ferland Mendy’s crucial tackle stopped David Silva from charging free on goal as the game swung from end to end.

Lyon threatened again on 28 minutes when Mendy burst down the left and found Cornet with a superb cross, but his first touch was woeful and when he looked to bury his shot at the second attempt, Laporte slid in and did just enough to put him off.

It was yet another let-off for City, who looked ragged and second best to a Lyon side growing in confidence.

All City could seem to muster was a long range effort from Zinchenko that sailed high and wide into the crowd.

But it seemed to be their lucky night as Lyon continued to blow chances, with Cornet guilty again on the stroke of half time when he chested a cross down before volleying onto the post from close range. As if home fans hadn’t suffered enough, they were forced to sit through big screen replays of Lyon’s misses at half time.

But all Cornet’s misses were forgotten just before the hour mark when he took a pass from Depay, looked up and curled a stunning effort into the top corner that left Ederson with no chance. Moments later Lopes produced a superb to keep out Aguero’s header but there was nothing he could do to stop Laporte’s effort from hauling City level.

Lopes then almost fumbled Leroy Sane’s deflected shot over his own line as City woke from their slumber and went in search of an unlikely winner.

But Cornet had other ideas and buried a low shot through Ederson on 81 minutes for his second of the night, only to see Aguero have the last laugh.
