City had persuaded the rail operator to sneak the extra stop into its timetable ahead of the team’s Premier League victory at Watford on Tuesday night.

One passenger who asked a guard why the train had stopped said he was told: “Basically Manchester City have bought the train.”

The commuter said: “I asked one of the guards what was happening. He said to me: ‘We’ve got some special people on board.’

“Moneybags Manchester City can call the shots even when it comes to the rail service.”

As a result of the extra stop the service arrived in London four minutes later than normal.

Last night City said it had not cost the club anything.

A source said: “We are a valued customer who regularly pay to take parties of 50 people on trains all over the country. We did not have to pay.”

A Virgin Trains spokesman said the extra stop had been announced a fortnight ago.

He said: “It was also shown on departure boards at the station and online.” ORDEAL: Stewart
