THE smartphone in your pocket remains the most popular way of snapping photos.

These cameras have got better in recent years with some shots easily looking as good as those taken on a professional DSLR.

But many still struggle when the lights get low. Until now.

The latest Mate 20 Pro, from Chinese firm Huawei, comes packed with a triple rear camera which helps it produce some of the best snaps you’ll find from a phone.

And one of its finest party tricks is taking photos in little or no light.

To check out Huawei’s boast that their camera is best in low light, we sent StarTech’s Joseph Carey, above, to one of the toughest locations for any camera.

Finland is getting deep into its midwinter, with the sun rising for just a few hours before darkness sets in again. These are tough conditions for a camera, but the Mate 20 Pro’s Night Mode produces photos that retain glorious detail even when it is pitch black.

During our first night in this snowcovered landscape, we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights – and to capture the stunning display with the phone.

Not only is Huawei’s camera system incredibly capable in lowlight conditions, it is also the most diverse thanks to its telephoto and wide-angle sensors.

The telephoto lens allows you to zoom in and capture the finest details and the wide-angle is able to fit more subjects into a shot.

In an environment as beautiful as Finland, the Mate 20 Pro showed why it’s one of the best handsets you can pick up right now. The phone also offers a 6.39-inch display, a huge battery and is fully water-resistant. While other Android devices such as Google Pixel 3 and OnePlus 6T also offer great cameras with similar night modes, nothing can match the complete photographic package offered by Huawei’s new Mate 20 Pro.
