Lingard rescues leaky United

-

on, Arsenal started to probe with success, particularly in the right-back channel where Eric Bailly was struggling with the pace of the game after two months out.

It was a corner from the left that led to the first goal, Lucas Torreira’s centre was met with a firm header from Mustafi which bounced into the turf before United goalkeeper De Gea inexplicably palmed the ball over his head.

Herrera’s effort to keep the ball out was in vain, Andre Marriner awarding a goal after his watch buzzed, confirming the ball had crossed the line

United were level within minutes, Anthony Martial turning in a simple chance after Marcos Rojo’s free-kick was pushed away by Leno, Herrera reaching the by-line and turning the ball back into the danger zone.

United’s equaliser put a firecracker under an already fiery contest with a flurry of five yellow cards arriving between the 37th and 42nd minutes, three brandished at the hosts and two to the visitors. Emery was forced into a change at half-time Aaron Ramsey making way for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the Armenian was soon in the thick of it.

He started the moved which restored Arsenal’s lead, robbing Rojo on the left flank and pushing the ball to Lacazette, Rojo’s recovery tackle deflecting the ball past De Gea.

Once again the Gunners’ lead was short-lived with a long ball from the restart nudged into Jesse Lingard’s path by Sead Kolasinac, the United striker stabbing the ball past Leno.

Arsenal had two decent chances soon after. Pierre Emerick Aubameyang forced a fine save from De Gea.

Then former United star Mkhitaryan hooked his shot over from close-range as both sides settled for a point.
