Smart meters show how much energy you are using, as you use it, so it’s easy to work out which appliances are the most costly.

And Victoria, 28, soon realised she could save money just by simply switching off and unplugging her devices when she wasn’t using them.

She said: “It’s interesting to see which appliances in your house use the most electricity. It’s definitely made me more conscious of switching devices off.

“Now I turn off the TV and anything else I can at night.

“And when I’m not using my appliances, I unplug them to save energy and money.”

Victoria is mum to two sons, Mason, nine months, and fouryear-old Conor. And as she’s still on maternity leave, it’s important to account for every penny.

Her smart meter has proved a real help to Victoria and husband David, 28, a joiner, when it comes to balancing the budget.

She said: “As I’m on maternity leave, we’re having to spread our money out a bit more. The smart meter has made a big difference.

“It’s much easier to keep track of what we’re spending. With the kids it’s important to know what our budget is and stick to it.”

Victoria, from Glasgow, has a prepay meter which means she doesn’t need to drag the kids out to the shops when it’s time to top up.

She added: “I’m terrible for letting the meter run down and having to dash out to the shop. Now I don’t have to drag the boys out when it’s absolutely freezing - I can just top up on my phone.”
