MY old MGB was so unreliable I should have nicknamed it Mystery Trip.

Why was that? Well every time I went out in it I never knew where I’d be staying that night.

That’s how often it broke down. I remember setting off with my son on a 225-mile trip in it and we only made it to the bottom of the road. We walked back to my house and took the train.

If only MG had been as good in the 80s as they are now we might still have a British-owned car industry.

Instead, today’s MGs are built in Shanghai by Chinese car giant SAIC and I’ll say one thing for them: They’re definitely reliable.

I’ve just been driving the face-lifted enough interior room for four adults, a 2ft 2in boot just about big enough for holiday luggage, which becomes 4ft 8in deep when you fold down the rear seatbacks to make room for all your golf gear or trips to the tip, sorry “recycling centre.”

Don’t, whatever you do, expect it to be fast because it’s not. But it’s not slow either. Adequate would describe it nicely, while the MG3’s handling is spectacularly good.

Did I like it? Well, I absolutely adored my old MGB, which was actually nicknamed Dylan, such was its looks and charm.

The new one? I never loved it, wouldn’t dream of giving it a nickname, but would not hesitate to take it on long-distance journeys.
