RAIL & AIR CHAOS
TRAIN staff and pilots are both set to strike in the run-up to Christmas – threatening chaos for commuters.
Workers on some of the busiest rail services in the country are to strike on the Saturday before Christmas in the long-running dispute over guards on trains.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union on South Western Railway will walk out on December 22.
The company runs services into London Waterloo, the busiest station in the UK.
Staff at Virgin Atlantic will take industrial action from December 22 to Christmas Day in a dispute over union recognition. The Professional Pilots Union said its members voted by seven to one in favour of strike action.
The PPU represents about a third of Virgin’s pilots and spokesman Steve Johnson said the union has conducted a work-to-rule action for two years.
He said it wanted to secure recognition by Virgin but it has been forced to take action after being “shut out”.
Mr Johnson added: “We hope Virgin acknowledge the mandate members have given and help avoid action by recognising the PPU and halt the benefits review that is so damaging.”
