ANYONE can buy fake police identity documents for just £10 online.
The phoney IDs are hard to distinguish from the real thing – and can be customised with anyone’s photo.
Police officers carry warrant cards to prove who they are, but it is feared that crooks could use the fakes to take advantage of vulnerable homeowners during the Christmas period.
According to the advert on eBay, 15 have already been sold.
One Metropolitan Police officer, who was speaking out anonymously, said: “Anyone can buy the cards and the public don’t know what the real ones look like – so it can be difficult to know that they are fake.
“Tourists can also fall victim, as they don’t want to get in trouble abroad.”
An Action Fraud spokesman said: “Before letting anyone into your home who claims to be from any law enforcement agency, ask to see their identity card and check it by calling 101. Police never request that you transfer money to them.”
The fakes being sold on eBay were said to be lacking the word “Metropolitan” above “Police” at the top.
They were also lacking a crest on the right side and braille markings.
