and is not prepared to give him any more funds to spend on new signings.

A source close to Mourinho said: “We are near the beginning of the transfer window and nobody knows anything.

“They are not working on selling players, they are not working on buying players and they have 58 scouts and three scouting bosses.

“It is ridiculous. Jose believes this is not the best way to rule a football club.”

United lost to Valencia in the Champions League on Wednesday to finish as runners-up in their group and are languishing in sixth place in the Premier League, 16 points behind leaders Liverpool, who they play on Sunday.

Mourinho is also annoyed that board members Woodward, Avram Glazer and his brother Joel were all absent from the Mestalla Stadium.

And he remains convinced the club are more interested in making money than winning trophies. United said last night that Woodward was in America on business.

They also pointed out that managing director Richard Arnold, chief financial officer Cliff Baty and chief operations officer Colette Roach were all at the match.

But the source added: “Nobody important from the board of directors was there in Valencia.

“What importance have those guys (who went) got in team matters?

“They don’t care about football, only money.”

Mourinho’s relationship with Woodward has been strained since the summer, when the club refused to sanction the signing of two defensive targets.

Earlier this week it was claimed Mourinho was also press-ganged into signing Paul Pogba from Juventus for £89m in 2016, because club bosses wanted him back at Old Trafford for his commercial value.
