Fancy a pickled sheep's eyeball?

-

Mongolia: Pickled eyeball

The Mongolian version of a Bloody Mary is the Mongolian Mary – which consists of pickled sheep eyeball in tomato juice.

The tomato has lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant.

Maybe the eyeball helps you “see” your way out of the hangover. Mexico & Romania: Tripe soup

You might think not a single human could face cow-stomach soup on a hangover, but actually two countries reckon a bowl of tripe soup will sort them out.

Mexicans opt for menudo – cow stomach with a red chili pepper base – to stimulate sinuses and clear a foggy head.

The Romanian version – ciorba de burta – includes hot pepper, garlic and vinegar to blast away the cobwebs.

Norway: Lutefisk

Again, not something you might be able to take on a churning stomach, this is dried white fish treated with lye, a substance obtained by leaching ashes and also known as sodium hydroxide.

If it’s made with cod it produces a very nasty smell. Poland: Pickle juice

Poles load up on pickle juice with extra vinegar to help get rid of headaches and that general yucky feeling.

South Korea: Cabbage soup with ox blood

Called haejangguk, it literally means “soup to chase a hangover away”.

There are variations of the recipe throughout South Korea but the basics are napa cabbage, soybean paste and congealed ox blood, which is also referred to as blood pudding. Delicious! Singapore: Kaya toast

People suffering in Singapore repair the damage by loading up on carbs and sugar in the form of this toast dish. They top the bread with sugar, coconut jam, poached eggs, pandan leaves and butter. Germany: Katerfruhstuck

Translated as “tomcat’s breakfast”, this includes marinated herring wrapped around pickle and onion slices. A very fishy idea! Peru: Leche de tigre

Although this means “tiger’s milk” in English, this base of ceviche actually consists of lime juice, onion, chillis, salt, pepper and juice from the fish it helps to marinate. As well as its hangovercuring properties, it is also reportedly an aphrodisiac! Denmark: Reparationsbajer

The Danes believe the best way to cure a hangover is hair of the dog.

So they drink this pale ale – which translates as recovery beer!
