‘Silent’ car horn on way

FORD is developing new technology to allow drivers to beep their horns silently.

The “extended range horn” would beam alerts to be played inside nearby vehicles or on the phones of pedestrians.

It is revealed in a newly published patent application.

The firm says: “A horn beep in a quiet neighbourhood can be seen as obtrusive or offensive.

“In louder areas, the sound may be drowned out by other noise.”
