Save the High Street
RETAILERS are claiming that generous tax subsidies handed out to charity shops are yet another factor putting a squeeze on the High Street.
The allegation came as official figures revealed that the Christmas footfall in shops dropped for the 13th consecutive year.
By no means do we want to lay into charity shops – they provide a valuable service for millions of people while raising money for brilliant causes.
But the message is simple for shoppers – use it or lose it.
The High Street is feeling the squeeze like never before, with the seemingly unstoppable rise of online shopping killing business for small and independent firms.
And now huge discounts on business rates offered to charity shops provide yet another obstacle to contend with.
The traditional British High Street is an institution and one that we should all be proud of.
If it’s an institution that we’re serious about saving, we should show our support with our feet and our wallets.
