Biker-smash Gary saved by his football stardom

- by ANDREW JAMESON andrew.jameson@dailystar.co.uk

GARY Lineker has told how he once avoided a red card on the road – because of his football fame.

The Match Of The Day host revealed he knocked a motorcyclist off his bike in London.

He said the biker was sent flying across the highway, and was “going mad” at him when he got up.

But Lineker, 58, said the man calmed down when he realised it was the former England hero who had hit him with his car.

Speaking to Danny Baker on their football podcast Behind Closed Doors, Gary said: “I knocked a motorbike over and what made it worse was I was stuck in traffic.

“It wasn’t moving and it was somewhere near Kensington High Street.

“There’s three lanes of traffic, I was on the outside lane of the three and I thought, ‘What’s going on here?’ You know like sometimes you just nudge out a little bit to have a look?

“And I didn’t see this motorbike flying up on my right-hand side.

“As I’ve gone out I’ve hit him and the bike’s gone ‘woof ’ across the road. And he’s gone right across with it – thankfully no oncoming traffic hit him. I was like, ‘Oh my God, what have I done, is he OK?’.

“And then he was on the floor and I thought, ‘Oh God, this is awful’.

“I went over and I said, ‘I’m really sorry’, and he’s going, ‘What do you think you’re doing?’. He’s going mad, like.

“And then he took his helmet off and he went, ‘Oh Gary! I don’t mind now!’ Honestly, I felt worse – I’d sooner have had a b **** cking.”
