AMAZONS LET MUSIC TALK

-

TOP 10 rockers The Amazons reckon bands should keep their opinions to themselves – as they end up looking daft.

The lads, whose self-titled debut album reached No 8, reckon it’s best to keep a low-profile.

Their new single Mother attacks trolls who get outraged on Twitter.

Singer Matthew Thomson, 25, told me: “Mother is about forgiveness, and that seems to be missing at the moment with people getting outraged at Twitter headlines.

“It feels like there’s no room for people to make mistakes, as everyone is so quick to judge.

“We try to stay out of it. I don’t know how productive it’d be to promote our opinions on Twitter – not all our fans would share them, and you often change your initial opinion anyway once you’ve dug a little deeper. While we’ve introduced ourselves to the public, we’ve been ‘Music first’.”

Mother previews the Reading rockers’ second album, out in summer.

“The new record is a love letter to rock ’n’ roll,” says Matthew. “It’s an exploration, looking at the heart of rock ’n’ roll music.

“We’re a band of brothers who feel like it’s us against the world.

“The cult of personality is lauded above everything else now, and I think it’s refreshing to see four people who know we’re better together and don’t have big individual egos.”

The band hope their new album might revive the fortunes of their beloved Reading FC, who use The Amazons’ song Black Magic as the music to run out to on the pitch.

“Reading are in a relegation battle in the Championship,” laughs Matthew. “They might be interested in a couple of our new songs to use instead, as Black Magic hasn’t brought them much luck!”

The Amazons play at Neighbourhood, Reading, and Leeds, and Community festivals, and they’d love to be at Glastonbury in June.

Matthew said: “We’ve got unfinished business with Glastonbury.

“When we played there two years ago, there were technical problems on stage. Now, we can go, ‘Oh, it happens’, but it’s different when there are thousands of people in front of you!

“I’ve no idea if we will play this summer, but they know where we are if they want to book us.”
