After launching in Japan, CD players arrive in the UK to take on records and cassettes. By the end of the century billions will have been sold.

41 years ago…Charlie Chaplin stolen.

A few months after his death at 88, the body of the British born comic actor is stolen from a grave in Switzerlan­d. Following a ransom demand, two mechanics are later convicted of grave robbing.

50 years ago…Concorde takes off.

The supersonic Anglo-French airliner makes its maiden test flight lasting 27 minutes. The iconic plane, able to fly at 1,300mph, would start commercial flights in 1976. It was retired in 2003.

86 years ago…King Kong opens.

The famous monster movie opens in New York to rave reviews. It tells the story of a huge ape obsessed with a beautiful young woman, played by Fay Wray.

115 years ago…Dr Seuss born.

Real name Theodor Seuss Geisel, the American will go on to become a hit children’s author, selling 600million books. His works include How the Grinch Stole

Christmas.

137 years ago…Queen Victoria shooting. Queen Victoria, left, narrowly escapes an eighth assassinat­ion attempt, this time by Roderick McLean in Windsor. He spends the rest of his life in an asylum.
