Archer on target

JORDAN HAILS ‘LITTLE BROTHER’

-

CHRIS JORDAN might miss out on his World Cup dream – but will be delighted if close pal Jofra Archer gets the nod.

The Barbados-born pair are Sussex team-mates but their relationship runs deeper than just a dressing room. Over the last few years Jordan, 30

(right) has been a mentor and sounding board for Archer, 25.

And although he harbours slim hopes of making the team for this summer’s 50-over showpiece event, the truth is that Archer is the coming man as he nears qualification to play for England.

Jordan, who accounted for Chris Gayle in the first T20 to help England to a four-wicket win in St Lucia on Tuesday night, said: “I speak to him literally every day, he’s like my little from DEAN WILSON in St Kitts brother. One of the things I admire about Jofra is he’s got a good head on his shoulders.

“He is similar to me, he just takes one moment at a time and one game at a time.

“There is noise about him potentially playing in the series before the World Cup. He still has to qualify, and I think he has a week or so to go.

“If it happens it’s a dream come true for him.

“I’m certain he’ll rise to the occasion because he’s that type or character.

“I’d love to be either in the same team or in the crowd when he makes his debut.”

Jordan could be a little bitter at the prospect of being leapfrogged again having already had to watch Jake Ball, Craig Overton and Sam Curran play ahead of him.

He has not played an ODI since 2016 but could use the T20 series to boost his chances of selection.

England play in St Kitts tomorrow night and Jordan added: “I’ve had conversations with Ed Smith (national selector) and he’s always said I’m there or thereabouts in the discussions. That gives me encouragement.

“T20 cricket is what I’m involved with at the minute. Anything past that I’ll leave to the selectors and the captain.

“I hope the World Cup ship hasn’t sailed for me. I can’t get too far ahead in my thinking. One game at a time and let the outcomes take care of themselves.”
