NO VAR a Liberty

- By DAVID McDONNELL

SWANSEA skipper Mike van der Hoorn slammed the decision not to have VAR in operation for their quarter-final. The Swans were dumped out of the FA Cup following two questionable decisions that could have gone their way had VAR been in use at the Liberty Stadium.

Replays showed the penalty award against Cameron Carter-Vickers for a trip on Raheem Sterling was harsh, while Sergio Aguero was offside when he scored the late winner.

Van der Hoorn said: “I think their penalty was very soft. You could see he didn’t touch the guy. For a foul I think you need to touch the opponent and he didn’t do that.

“I think his [Aguero’s] foot was offside. It’s top-team luck maybe but they pressed us and forced everything to win the game.

“Last year they did it [had VAR]. So, in this situation for us, it would have been a big help because it cost us two goals. But it’s not there, so we can’t do much about it.”

Told VAR was used in two cup ties this weekend but not at Swansea or Millwall’s game against Brighton, Van der Hoorn said: “That’s a bit weird. “I think you have to equal that. If you do it at one, you should have them at all.

“For us, and even for City, it’s a big game. We wanted to go to Wembley and that’s a bit weird. “You need a bit of luck. But we gave everything. We put bodies on the line and they were forcing us to make that tackle, to make that error.”
