Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts, lead officer for football policing at the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said: “We believe cocaine is linked to a rise in disorder at grounds. It is a significant factor.”
Incidents of fan disorder are up 45% over the past two seasons, with 38% of all fixtures reporting some form of violence.
DCC Roberts now wants clubs to contribute more to funding policing outside their grounds.
He said: “Football wants its stadiums to be shiny and pristine but on the outside police are left to pick up the pieces. The cocaine problem is very much a part of that.
“Policing it and deterring it requires professional expertise.” His warning comes after a woman steward’s nose was broken in a pitch invasion at Bournemouth.
There were other invasions by fans at West Ham and Swansea.
And female bar staff at Bournemouth were attacked by angry Newcastle fans who couldn’t buy alcohol after a flare was let off.
A 17-year-old worker was dragged over the counter by her hair.
