ONE of the best bits of MARRIED AT FIRST SIGHT, which kicks off its fourth series tonight on Channel 4 (9pm) is when the participants break the big news to their respective parents – namely, that in six weeks’ time they’ll be wedding a total stranger.

Will the parents be horrified, or thrilled to bits for them? (Obviously you hope very much it’s the first of those, at least to start with, because that way it’s far more fun.)

Property manager Jonathan, 39, from Bristol, drives over to his mum Susan’s place to announce

he’s got engaged – and, more to the point, that all he really knows about his fiancée is her name, which is Steph.

“So you don’t know if she’s like a Pamela Anderson?” Jonathan’s mum inquires. “Because she used to be your pin-up…”

Moments later, she’s fastforwarding like crazy, already talking about “little ones on the way…” No pressure, then.

Meanwhile, nurse Steph, 28, from Somerset, gets a surprisingly positive response from her own mother, Vicci. “Flipping Nora!” she goes. “I hope he’s not an idiot.”

ELSEWHERE tonight, Morven Christie stars in ITV’s new six-part crime drama THE BAY

(9pm). It’s set in Morecambe (ITV crime dramas do like to be beside the seaside, remember) and centres on the disappearance of teenage twins. Christie is DS Lisa Armstrong, a police family liaison officer who’s alarmed to learn of a link she has to the missing kids’ family. If the truth gets out, it could not only undermine the investigation but threaten her career. So it seems she’ll have to stop that happening, then…
