TEED-OFF ANDY FEELS ROUGH AND READY

- ■ by NEIL McLEMAN

SIR ANDY MURRAY is delighted to ditch the golf clubs and get back to doing what he does best.

The Scot, 32, will play at the Fever-Tree Championships this week following his January hip operation.

Since then, the two-time Wimbledon champion has spent his time since playing “horrible” golf and getting stuck in escape rooms.

But Murray is now looking forwards and says his second hip surgery has left him pain-free for the first time in years.

“From eight weeks after my operation, the pain in my hip was pretty much done and then I started doing loads of things that I hadn’t been doing,” said the former world No.1.

“Whether it’s dinners, playing golf, escape rooms – just doing different stuff.

“I played the golf club championships with my brother, which went horribly.

“We are both member Wentworth.

“Why was it horrible? Well, scoring triple digits I don’t think is normally considered good news when you are on the golf course.

“Me and Jamie scored 101 each which was not pleasant.

But it was good. A humbling experience.

“I hadn’t shanked a ball for the last 12/13 rounds I had played and I had three on the first hole.

“The escape rooms you are locked in a room and you have 60 minutes to get out. And there are lots of different clues and puzzles to solve. You have to work stuff out.”

Murray and his doubles partner Feliciano Lopez will have to work out how to beat No.1 seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the first round at Queen’s.

Asked why, after all he has achieved, he is continuing his career, Murray said: “I’m a fan of the sport. I’ve played it since I was a kid and I want to keep playing.

“It would be nice to be winning Wimbledon and major tournaments, but hardly anyone gets the opportunity to do that and there are still loads of players that love and enjoy the sport without being able to win.

“I don’t know what to expect and I’m not putting any expectations on myself because just being out there on a tennis court again and being comfortable and pain free will be enough.”
