FOOL PHIL’S 27p FOR SCHOOLS
Cash joke is mocked
PHILIP Hammond has caused fury after making a crass joke about education funding.
The Chancellor was being asked about plans to give schools a £27billion funding injection, only to laugh and say they “might get 27p”.
His jibe followed Theresa May’s pleas for more funds for education in a desperate bid to secure her legacy as Prime Minister.
However, he insisted funding will only be considered once Mrs May steps down. He said: “Schools funding is a matter for the spending review this autumn.
“The Department for Education has made representations and we are trying to help with that – but it won’t be in the region of £27billion. “They might get 27p.” Allies of Mrs May mocked Mr Hammond, claiming that his comments showed his “characteristic deft political touch”.
