But in all that time Special Constable Richard Warren has only made “around five arrests”.

The 74-year-old’s role as a countrysid­e copper involves patrolling roads and driving vans carrying violent offenders.

Richard said: “I can arrest people but I don’t go out of the way to do that. My main role is to help people, mainly doing rural patrols and foot patrols.”

The reigning Formula 1 world champ, 34, was at Silverston­e, Northants, ahead of Sunday’s British Grand Prix. added: “I am trained to use the extended batons and pepper spray and wear a body camera.”

He also volunteers as a litter picker and cares for his wife Lynette, 70, who has multiple sclerosis. But he has no plans to retire from his role as a part-time plod.

Richard said: “A lot of my work is with people who have concerns for welfare and missing persons.

“I’ll help out if any children are involved – for example the mum of an 11-year-old boy was taken into custody.

“I just kept him calm informed about what going on.” and was
