‘Ban all maniac drivers’

-

SAFETY campaigners called for tougher laws to stop Britain’s roads being turned into death tracks.

They are demanding instant “no argument” bans for any driver clocked doing more than 100mph.

Last year the number of motorists stopped by police for exceeding 100mph soared to almost 9,600.

But many escaped bans after telling courts how much hardship a ban will cause them.

Road safety campaign group Brake now wants an automatic ban for any driver caught doing more than 100mph.

Joshua Harris, the charity’s director of campaigns, said: “There is no justification for any driver to be travelling at such excessive speeds.

“We have to make sure these dangerous drivers are taken off our roads.”

The top speed recorded in 2018 was 162mph, seen by traffic officers on both the M1 in South Yorkshire and the M4 in Avon and Somerset.
