A MAN has been charged with attempted murder after a police officer was slashed and stabbed with a machete in an “unprovoked and frenzied” attack.

The hero cop, who is 28, remains in a serious but stable condition after he was savagely struck several times with a blade late on Wednesday after stopping a van in Leyton, east London.

Muhammed Rodwan, 56, of Luton, Bedfordshire, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon. He is due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court in Bow, east London, today.

The policeman’s family are receiving support from family liaison officers.

The brave officer managed to Taser his attacker but needed surgery on his hand and stitches in his head, but he is expected to recover.

A shocked witness said: “The police didn’t have a chance to do anything. He jumped out of his van and hit him with the machete three times in the head.”

Another onlooker, Uber driver Muhammad Faisal, 31, said he saw a suspect being pinned down on the floor before being bundled into the back of a police van.

WE all know knife crime is out of control.

The epidemic is growing worse by the day.

But the sight of a cop being stabbed in the head with a machete is truly shocking.

The hero officer managed to bring down the attacker with his Taser despite suffering multiple wounds.

Talk about going beyond the call of duty.

His actions should be rightly applauded.

But it is also a terrifying example of the crisis blighting our streets.

Something has to be done.

The Government needs to take action.

We need more protection for our brave officers on the front line.

That means more resources and more boots on the ground.

And tougher sentences for anyone found with a knife.

It’s the only way to restore order to our communities.

No more excuses.

We must act now.
