HISTORY BUFFS SLAM MISTAKES

-

AMERICAN Horror Story actress Jessica Lange is looking a bit of a fright in her new Netflix drama The Politician.

The show – which also stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Bette Midler – is about a wealthy student (played by Ben Platt) who grows up believing he is destined to become the president of the United States. PEAKY Blinders returns to our screens on Sunday, August 25, we can reveal.

Fans cannot get enough of Cillian Murphy as mobster Tommy Shelby and his gang who rule the streets of Birmingham in the BBC One drama.

But stuffy historians are not so impressed and have listed a series of “peaky blunders” that appear to have eluded the writers.

For starters, they point out the real street gangs which operated in the region post World War One were youngsters aged 13 and 14 rather than adults.

In one episode set in 1922 there was a car number plate YP8086 but that would not have been registered until 1926. And in another, The Shelbys left a mince pie for “Santa and Rudolph” in 1925 – yet the red nosed reindeer was not created until 1939.

Fans will also have seen a man singing a song called The Boys Of The Old Brigade – a track written in the 1970s about the Easter Rising by Irish republicans to end the British rule of Ireland back in 1916.

And despite claims their famous peaked flat caps had razors sewn into them to be used as a weapon to throw at people to blind them (hence “Peaky Blinders”), historians say this is “a complete myth”.

If they still make errors in the latest – and fifth – BBC One series there is still time to right the wrongs as fans will be delighted to hear creator Steven Knight is already writing season six.
