EMI-GREAT Luiz loves his Gunners move

- ■ by JOHN CROSS

DAVID LUIZ last night completed the most remarkable deadline-day switch after sealing an £8m move to Arsenal.

Brazil defender Luiz swapped Chelsea for Arsenal after forcing his way out of Stamford Bridge to move to the Emirates.

Luiz, 32, has become public enemy No.1 with Chelsea fans but an instant hit with Arsenal supporters, who saw their club enjoy a busy end to the transfer window.

Gunners boss Unai Emery also completed a £25m deal for Celtic’s Kieran Tierney, while Arsenal offloaded Alex Iwobi in a £35m deal with Everton.

It means Arsenal – who broke their record to sign Nicolas Pepe for £72m – have ended up with a net spend of just £45m but look significantly stronger.

Emery said: “David has huge experience and I look forward to working with him again. He is a well-known player and adds to our defensive strength.”

Arsenal finally got their man with Tierney, who they first tried to sign three years ago.

The 22-year-old has signed a five-year deal at Arsenal and immediately promised to “make some noise” after leaving his boyhood heroes Celtic.

It has been a transfer saga which lasted all summer before Arsenal got the deal done on deadline day – with the move even held up at the last minute.

Tierney, who will wear the No.3 shirt, was with some friends in a local park when he got the call to say the deal had been agreed – but his journey from Glasgow to London turned into a nightmare.

The Scotland left-back – who is recovering from a double hernia operation – said: “I got to the airport and the flight was delayed two-and-a-half hours, with another hour’s drive for a hotel and I got zero sleep.

“It was the hardest decision I’ve had to make in my life. I had to speak to my family and close friends and my agent as well because it’s hard to leave a club you love so much.

“I’ve come to London and I want to make some noise. I feel Arsenal is a massive club and it’s a great opportunity.”

Everton secured a deal with Arsenal for midfielder Iwobi, 23, just minutes before the 5pm deadline. They put a deal sheet in to the Premier League just in time to give them two hours to complete the transfer.

Iwobi underwent a medical in London before penning a five-year deal.
