Healthy eating addicts

-

INSTAGRAM celebs are fuelling a “clean eating” disorder where people become too obsessed with eating healthy food.

Experts claim an obsession known as orthorexia is on the rise, with sufferers struggling to cope as they worry about what food is correct for them.

Dr Cristina HanganuBresch of the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, US, says the problem follows the promotion of clean eating and wellness on websites and social media such as Instagram.

Instead of making sufferers fitter, they end up starving themselves so much they get sick and suffer mammoth weight loss.

The academic said: “People have always tried to eat healthily – that’s nothing new.

“But what we are seeing now is people become obsessed with clean eating to the point where it affects both their physical and mental wellbeing.

“Seeing images on social media of tanned, glowing people looking happy, who claim that they got there through so-called healthy eating, then makes these more susceptible people buy into that lifestyle too.”
