Dark days are over for Jack

- ■ by JAMES CANDY

JACK WILSHERE aims to end West Ham’s 39-year wait for a major trophy after emerging from the darkest period of his injury-hit career.

He scored his first goal for 18 months as the Hammers won at Newport on Tuesday.

The midfielder has only played 55 minutes of football since an ankle injury derailed his first season at West Ham in December.

But now the 34-times capped England international

(right) is ready to play a central role to help realise the London club’s European ambitions.

“Without doubt it was the most difficult time of my career,” said Wilshere. “It’s difficult when you come to a new club, you want to have a period of time in the team.

“I had a few games and then I picked up an injury and it took longer than expected to come back.

“It was frustrating and I didn’t feel I was part of the team. It was important for me to have a good pre-season, stay around the boys and be training and improving every day. “We can possibly get into Europe and have a right go in one of the cups and win a trophy for the fans. “It’s been a long time since this club won a trophy and it’s a shame because we’ve got such a big fan base.”
