DANNY INGS lived out his boyhood dream by firing Southampton to a first Fratton Park win in 35 years.
The lifelong Saints fan bagged a derby double while Cedric Soares and sub Nathan Redmond added goals in the second half.
This was the first time the hated Hampshire rivals had met since 2012.
Extra police were drafted in amid fears of crowd trouble. Police helicopters circled over the ground and horses were used to shepherd 2,000 Saints fans to their seats.
Southampton’s players looked rocked by the vitriol flowing from the rickety stands and allowed Pompey to lay siege to their penalty area in the early exchanges.
The League One hosts came close to opening the scoring after nine minutes when John Marquis drilled a long-range effort against the outside of the post.
Saints, 50 League places above their hosts, had another let-off four minutes later as Brett Pitman’s volley was deflected inches over the bar. Pitman also saw his header from a corner smuggled away by Saints keeper Alex McCarthy.
Pompey were made to pay when Ings broke the deadlock in the 21st minute with a clinical finish.
Michael Obafemi’s shot was parried out by Craig MacGilivary and the ball was worked back from James Ward-Prowse to Ings, who powerfully picked out the corner.
Ings raced back before sliding in delight in front of the celebrating Saints fans. The goal woke Saints from their slumber and it took a brilliant block from Oli Hawkins to keep out Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s goal-bound effort.
Ings showed his Premier League class again a minute before half-time, lifting the ball over the onrushing MacGilivary from Obafemi’s defence-splitting pass.
Cedric ended the game as a contest 13 minutes from time by turning in Ings’ low left-wing cross.
Redmond crowned Pompey’s misery with a fine fourth goal in the 87th minute by cutting in from the left and curling an unstoppable shot into the corner.
The triumph was Saints’ first on Pompey soil since Steve Moran bagged a stoppage-time winner in an FA Cup tie in 1984.
