Lawyers acting for his brother and cousin have drawn up a list of documents they want.
They could include emails, video footage and internal correspondence between those involved in the making and broadcast of the programme.
The legal team wants to study how he came to be on the show, his experience on-set and behind the scenes, and what aftercare he was offered and received.
Lawyers will today ask a coroner to order the release of the documents at a pre-inquest hearing in Portsmouth.
Det Sgt Marcus Mills told the opening of the inquest Steve had become “concerned about the repercussions of the show and the rumours that had started as a result.
Steve’s son Carl said that his dad had told him in a phone call after filming that host Kyle had “really laid into” him.
Carl said: “Presumably that was at the point when they announced the lie detector result.’’
The episode in which Steve appeared was never broadcast.
But ITV axed the show after a 14-year run with host Kyle saying he was “utterly devastated”.
MPs have since launched an inquiry into reality TV.
The full inquest is due to resume next month.
