Deaths hotspot

THE number of deaths spiked on the hottest day of the summer.

A total of 1,473 people died on July 25 in England and Wales as temperatur­es reached 38.7C.

The Office for National Statistics said: “Vulnerable people, for example those with respirator­y diseases, are more susceptibl­e during heatwaves.” But it added winter weather “consistent­ly” led to more deaths than in summer.
