Deaths hotspot

THE number of deaths spiked on the hottest day of the summer.

A total of 1,473 people died on July 25 in England and Wales as temperatures reached 38.7C.

The Office for National Statistics said: “Vulnerable people, for example those with respiratory diseases, are more susceptible during heatwaves.” But it added winter weather “consistently” led to more deaths than in summer.
