Dan: We’ll fight back

- ■ by JAMES NURSEY

DANIEL JAMES insists Manchester United’s young guns can handle the pressure in the wake of their shocking start to the season.

Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle extended their worst start to a league season for 30 years and next up after the international break is the visit of unbeaten league leaders Liverpool on October 20.

But James, 21, signed in the summer for £15m from Swansea, insisted United’s starlets can turn the tide.

“You have seen in the Premier League this season that a lot of teams are playing with young squads who are showing what they can do,” said James.

“It is important in football how you react to things when things aren’t going so well.

“It is alright when things are going well but everyone always says it is how you deal with things when they are going badly.

“That is so important. It is still early days.”

James was expected to be a squad player at United after breaking through at Championship side Swansea last season.

But he is one of the few United players to perform above expectations, with three goals.

James says his shock rise to prominence has taught him to prepare for anything, good or bad.

And he is determined to continue to seize his chance despite United’s struggles.

He added: “I’ve had a good start and am enjoying my football. A year ago I wasn’t really playing that much for Swansea.

“Everything has happened so quick. If someone asked me a year ago today would this be happening, I would have said, ‘Don’t be silly’.

“It is just about how you deal with it. Everyone who speaks to me says be yourself and don’t let anything fear you and that’s what I do.

“But things happen so quickly in football you have to be ready for anything – things go badly as well.”
