Ardal O’Hanlon is quitting the Caribbean murdermystery series – making him the third leading actor to leave.
BBC chiefs are now lining up a fourth star to take his place in the 10th series.
A source said: “It’s getting like Doctor Who. Every few years, their leading detective leaves and his face changes.”
Father Ted’s Ardal joined the hit crime drama in 2016 as DI Jack Mooney.
His predecessors were Kris Marshall (as DI Humphrey Goodman from 2014-2016) and Ben Miller (who played DI Richard Poole from 2011 until 2014).
Ardal will bow out in the ninth series due in 2020 but, since a 10th season has been ordered, BBC bosses have had to find a new – yet to be revealed – leading cop.
Ardal said last night: “It’s time to move on. I’m confident viewers will share my enthusiasm for Jack’s successor!”
BBC drama’s Tommy Bulfin added: “As one door closes another one opens. We’re excited about what’s to come.”
