Getting there is simple, via a two-hour flight to Lisbon with TAP. Cascais, pronounced “Kash-kyshe”, is just a 40-minute drive away, making day trips to the capital perfectly do-able.

Meanwhile Sintra, the fairytale town of pastel-hued palaces and exotic gardens, is less than half an hour north.

The coastal road running around the town takes in many of the area’s famous sights, including the striking viewpoint Boca do Inferno, Portuguese for “hell’s mouth”, a chasm that fills and empties with the tide.

Close by is the 150-year-old

Santa Marta lighthouse on the mouth of the River Tagus.

Distinctiv­e with its horizontal blue and white stripes, it was fully renovated in 2007 and is still active in guiding ships.

Next door lies the stunning Casa de Santa Maria, a 19th century stately home. Now open to the public, the House of Saint Mary was built by an Irish tobacco millionair­e and was once the most luxurious private residence of Cascais.
