Mates to keep Son spirits up

- ■ by CHRIS McKENNA

TOTTENHAM will rally around Heung-min Son to ensure the Spurs forward knows Andre Gomes’ horror injury was an accident.

Son was distraught after Gomes suffered a fracture dislocation of his right ankle after being tripped by the South Korean star.

Everton midfielder Gomes got his foot stuck in the turf before colliding with Spurs full-back Serge Aurier after he was tackled by Son (above).

Son was sent off and sobbed for over an hour in the dressing room at Goodison Park before leaving the ground still in tears.

“He’s really shaken up,” said left-back Ben Davies, Spurs’ captain in Sunday’s 1-1 draw.

“He’s down about what happened. We will try to pick him up as much as we can. It’s tough right now.

“It’s about making sure that he realises he didn’t go out there to hurt anyone – he thinks that people may see that in him but it’s not the case.

“It’s one of those things. There were probably three tackles that were worse.

“It’s a freak moment. Son can’t let himself be too down about it.

“As a group we have to pull together now.

“You could see how much it affected everyone in the stadium. It was a tough moment to deal with.

“It shakes you up, it really does. It doesn’t matter if it’s your team-mate or not. You can see the emotion across the pitch.

“Nobody goes on the pitch to hurt anyone, especially not somebody like Son, who is a bit broken.”

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino felt the striker should not have been sent off.

Spurs were leading 1-0 through Dele Alli but Cenk Tosun headed a stoppagetime equaliser.
