TOSUN RELIVES GOMES HORROR

- ■ by CHRIS McKENNA

CENK TOSUN felt he simply had to score for his close pal Andre Gomes.

The Everton striker grabbed a late equaliser against Tottenham on Sunday to rescue a point for the Toffees.

It was the out-of-favour forward’s first goal for the club this season and an important one for manager Marco Silva.

But it was all overshadowed by the horror ankle injury suffered by midfielder Gomes.

The Portuguese player was screaming in agony while Tosun cradled his head amid the disturbing scenes at Goodison Park.

Spurs forward Heung-min Son, who tripped Gomes which led to his freak injury, was hysterical as he was sent off for the foul.

Tosun said: “The goal is for him, the point is for him. If we had a few minutes more we would have won it for him. We were pressing and pressing.

“We are good friends. We sit at the same table together at Finch Farm. He always helps me when we are on the pitch together, too.

“When he went off I just tried to score for him. I will see him maybe today (in hospital).

“I was so happy, I was waiting such a long time for this goal and I could not even enjoy it.”

Tosun’s equaliser came in the seventh of 12 added-on minutes and earned Everton a point when it looked like Dele Alli’s second-half strike would secure victory for Spurs.

It was a big result considering Everton’s stuttering Premier League form this season. But there were no celebrations in the Goodison dressing room afterwards.

Now Tosun wants the Everton squad to inspire Gomes in his recovery, after it was confirmed yesterday that surgery on the fracture dislocation of his ankle was a success.

“Everyone is just so sad,” added Tosun. “We could not even celebrate our point. It was a fair point and we deserved it.

“It was a tough game after what had happened with going behind and then the incident with Andre and then the red card.

“But we showed great team spirit and it was a well-deserved one point for us.

“The fans, us, the staff, we were all so upset. Some players, they nearly cried.

“I just went to Andre, I tried to speak to him and tried to help him to stay calm but he was in shock. It will be a tough time for Andre but sometimes in football these injuries happen.

“I just hope and pray he comes back stronger in six months after his surgery. We will give him the motivation he needs.”

Everton defender Mason Holgate revealed how the terrible injury suffered by Gomes brought the Toffees players together and inspired them to get back into the game.

Holgate said: “It shows what we are about as a team.

“We all got together and I think it drove us on a bit more. Once we got going, we were all trying to do it for him.”
