The Arctic beast tried to appear smarter than the average bear as it performed stretches in the Svalbard archipelago off Norway.

LIDL may have to shelve a new store because the site is metres from a nuclear weapons factory.

The budget supermarket would need its own bunker to protect customers.

It would also require specially trained staff to look after customers and to lock down the shop for 24 hours in an emergency.

The branch is earmarked on land just 600 yards from the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston, Berks.

Michael Butler, a planner at West Berkshire Council, is recommending the plans are refused.

He said: “It will require evacuation in the event of an incident, and the ability of store staff to respond adequately is questioned.

“Ventilation and waste disposal over perhaps a 24-hour period has to be taken into account.”

But 849 locals back a Lidl with just 55 against.

The AWE site produces warheads for the UK’s Trident nuclear deterrent.
