Chris could well land in bov-ver

- By CHRIS McKENNA

CHRIS EUBANK JNR resumes his career in the Big Apple this weekend but he might have bitten off more than he can chew.

The Brighton fighter takes on Russian Matt Korobov in a fight that feels all wrong for him.

It is almost a year since his win over James DeGale, the moment that could have finally made the son of the former two-weight world champion a top title hope.

But he has lost all momentum since then. The fact his US manager Al Haymon has abandoned plans to have more UK shows hasn’t helped.

Nor has ITV walking from a deal to put on away those (left) shows. The broadcaster showed the DeGale fight on pay-per-view.

The exact number of buys is unknown but those who know said they were very low and far from a success for the channel.

So Eubank Jnr has had to wait until Haymon could take him to the US and the slow process has really hurt the Brit.

And even if he wins in New York, it will barely be noticed.

The Russian is no longer seen as a major player in the US and the fight is on just hours after the rematch involving the biggest name in British boxing – Anthony Joshua.

Why Haymon’s team have opted to sling Eubank Jnr out this weekend is unfathomable and it’s no easy fight either.

Eubank Jnr is back at middleweight but Korobov is a serious fighter who has only lost to world champion Andy Lee and US star Jermall Charlo.

The reward for the winner will probably be a shot at Charlo if the American beats Irishman Dennis Hogan in the main event at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

All in all, it’s a bit of matchmaking that could turn out to be very bad for the Brit’s career.
