DOG walkers are being urged to keep their pets off playing fields after an athlete suffered a pooch poo infection.

The rugby player had received a small cut in a game.

But the wound became infected with dog mess.

And now he faces an anxious wait to see if he needs an operation on the festering sore.

Rugby chiefs shared a stomachchurning snap of the player’s oozing leg along with a plea to dog owners to steer clear of playing fields.

The online post from Cwmafan RFC, near Port Talbot in south Wales, read: “This is why dogs should never be allowed on playing fields. This is the leg of one of our 1st XV players after dog mess got into a cut during an away game.

“If it doesn’t improve he’s going to have to have surgery to clean it out. Keep dogs off playing fields.”

Social media critics blamed “irresponsible” dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets.

Deadly

And others highlighted that wounds can develop into potentially deadly infection toxocariasis, which can cause blindness.

David Stretch Williams wrote: “This is through an inconsiderate dog owner, hope the player will be ok. Imagine if one of your junior players had fallen in it! Could’ve been a lot worse.” Chris Daniel said: “I remember having it all over my face when I was playing because a prop had it all over his shorts and I was playing second row at the time.

“Isn’t funny if it gets into your eyes can blind you. Dogs should not be on playing fields full stop.”

Gemma Kodak Williams wrote: “No excuse not to be picking dog mess up, so infuriating and gives other owners a bad name.”

And Susie Bond said: “Stop allowing dogs on playing fields.

“I’m a dog owner who picks up after my dog but many don’t so just stop everyone using your fields.

“It isn’t fair on the sportsmen… dangerous and disgusting.”
