YESTERDAY, we reported that viewers ad been enraged after a BBC blunder saw an pisode of Fawlty Towers which included the word broadcast on its new streaming service. The controversial 1975 episode, called The ermans, has Major Gowen, played by Ballard Berkeley, using the slur – and despite it being removed from broadcasts in 2013, unedited episodes have made it on to Britbox. But what happened to the actor who played the army veteran and the rest of the cast of the 1970s sitcom? NATASHA WYNARCZYK reveals all…

MAJOR Gowen was a long-standing guest at the hotel and was arguably the show’s most bigoted character. Berkeley had small roles in the sitcoms Hi-de-Hi! and Are You Being Served? He also performed in London’s West End and on Broadway. Prior to joining Fawlty Towers, he shared a flat with Cary Grant and worked as a special constable during World War Two. He died in 1988 aged 83.

SACHS played hapless Spanish waiter Manuel, who bore the brunt of Basil’s fiery temper. He went on to film a threeseason stint in Casualty and played Ramsay Clegg, the half-brother of Norris Cole, in Coronation Street. He also did voiceovers for Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends and had various radio roles.

In 2008, he hit the headlines after Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross left rude voicemails on his phone live on air. “Sachsgate” prompted 42,000 complaints. Brand quit the BBC and Ross was suspended. Sachs was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2012 and died four years later aged 86.
