Rory’s really Cookin’ says Ben
BEN STOKES believes England have unearthed a gem in Rory Burns – after comparing the opener to record run scorer Alastair Cook.
The former Test skipper retired from international cricket 15 months ago and Burns has gone some way to filling his giant shoes with two centuries and five 50s in his opening 14
Tests. Following a solid debut Ashes campaign, the Surrey star cemented his top-order status with a second Test ton in England’s recent series defeat against New Zealand.
And all-rounder Stokes (pictured yesterday, left, with his new book, On Fire) has backed Burns (inset) to continue his impressive start to his
England career when Joe Root’s men head to South Africa this month.
“We have found a gem in Rory Burns,” Stokes said.
“He’s going to have a long future. He’s similar to Alastair Cook in the way he operates, occupying the crease and looking to spend time out in the middle to score his runs.”
Meanwhile, Pakistan are in “serious discussions” to host England in 2021. Pakistan’s decade-long isolation from hosting Tests ends today against Sri Lanka. “We are due to play England in 2021-22 and are in serious discussions with them about coming to Pakistan,” said PCB Board chairman Ehsan Mani.
