Fergie hoping to hit the roof

- ■ by RICHARD TANNER

DUNCAN FERGUSON says they will have to pull him down from the Old Trafford roof if Everton record a rare win there tomorrow.

The caretaker boss insists victory will surpass any of his achievements against Manchester United as a player.

Ferguson was often the scourge of namesake Sir Alex’s all-conquering team, scoring seven goals against them – six for Everton and one for Newcastle.

Two towering headers earned Everton famous 1-0 wins over United at Goodison Park in 1995 and 2005, he scored twice in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in 1996 and he also played his part in the shock 1995 FA Cup Final triumph over United.

But the big Scot says if Everton can follow up last Saturday’s impressive win over Chelsea, it will be the high point of his career.

“I’d be on the roof probably if we win,” he said. “I had a good record against them as a player but to do it as a manager would be incredible. We are confident but United are on a great run.

“They have lost only one game at home this season and we have won only once there in the last

20-odd years.

“It is a big ask but I’m sure we are capable of it and can give a good account of ourselves.”

Ferguson said he was always up for playing against United because he wanted to show he could compete with the best. And he wants his players to show the same mentality.

He added: “They were the best team in the country and I wanted to show that I was a top player too.

“I think the win over Chelsea made the players realise they are a good team and there are a lot of good players in the squad.

“As long as they keep running, tackling and fighting for the shirt, that will take us a long way.”
