A MUM who was forced to wait six hours on a freezing pavement for an ambulance after breaking her foot later died in hospital.

Donna Gilby left her home for a doctor’s appointment when she slipped and was unable to move.

Friends of the 47-year-old, inset, who suffered from an irregular heartbeat, called 999 but were told there was a “heavy influx” of calls.

She finally arrived at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, at 2pm, six hours after her fall. But she then suffered a heart attack in the early hours of the next morning and passed away.

Factory worker dad Gareth, 74, said: “We still can’t really believe it. We called the ambulance service and told them Donna was in and out of consciousness.

“The call handler told us they had a heavy influx of calls and they would be with her as soon as possible.

“She was as good as gold and put others before herself. She would do anything for anyone.”

Her family later shared a photo of Donna, who had an 11-year-old daughter, lying face down and covered in blankets outside, near to her home in Cwmaman, Mid Glamorgan. Jason Killens, chief of the Welsh Ambulance Service, said an investigation will be launched into Donna’s death. He revealed: “We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family. “We are investigating Ms Gilby’s case.” ★
