PEP GUARDIOLA watched Gabriel Jesus score twice before demanding more from his Manchester City star.

The Brazilian struck in the second half to inspire City to a 2-1 win and condemn Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti to his first defeat since taking charge.

Jesus has been involved in 17 goals this season but Guardiola thinks the striker has a lot of improving to do.

The City boss said: “He’s a young player and the way he defended and fought, he has to improve and he knows that, but every day he gets better and better.

“What he has shown so far in the period he’s been here, he’s had ups and downs with age and injuries, but he’s been excellent.

“Sergio Aguero is irreplaceable for our fans at this club. It’s difficult. He has to improve and he knows that.”

Guardiola – who felt Dominic Calvert-Lewin should have been sent off – has already conceded the title to league leaders Liverpool but insists his side will never down tools.

He said: “I’m so delighted about the performance.

“We are far away and teams can give up and finish seventh or eight and maybe we will – but not because we don’t try.”

Ancelotti disagreed with Guardiola over Calvert-Lewin’s challenge and said: “We were not good in the first half. We were too slow and needed to find a solution.

“But in the second period we had more intensity and tried to find an equaliser.

“Pep knows it was not a red card.

“It was a strong tackle but he went on the ball so I think it was the right decision.”
