Klopp in thick of VAR debate

- ■ by CHRIS McKENNA

JURGEN KLOPP believes VAR should use thicker lines when judging offsides to solve the current mess.

The Liverpool boss revealed Europe’s top managers have already discussed the introduction of wider offside margins for VAR at a UEFA meeting in Nyon.

Decisions are being made in centimetres using lines on replays that take too long and have left fans furious.

Jack Grealish had a goal ruled out for Aston Villa at Burnley yesterday because Wesley’s heel was ahead of the last defender in the build-up.

Klopp says it would restore the advantage to the forwards rather than goals being disallowed for a player’s “toe nail” being offside.

He said: “We want to have clarification and right decisions.

“With offside we get them now, the only problem is it feels like it takes half an hour before you see whether the toe nail is there or not.

“But that is offside so we have to make a decision about it.

“UEFA came up with an idea which said just make the line thicker.

“For me it would give us a little bit of football back because how I learned offside it was the benefit of the doubt for the offensive player.

“All the situations we have now it is in favour of the defensive line.

“I like a thicker line and then we all have to adjust to that.”

Liverpool host Sheffield United today looking to extend their record of 18 wins from 19 games this season.

Ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said yesterday that Klopp’s players have the same fearless attitude to losing that his invincible side of 2004 had but the Liverpool manager says they don’t believe they are unbeatable.

The German said: “You don’t fear losing in the situation we are in but you still know it is possible – it is one of three possible results: win, lose or draw.

“I constantly try to make sure of increasing the probability to win a game and there’s always the other team there.

“I can only say we don’t fear losing.

“I try to create as many solutions as possible to win games, sometimes it works out, sometimes not.”
