ACTIVISTS have slammed a group of Tory students who “trivialised blood sports” by holding a “fox and hounds” bar chase through a city centre.

Students dressed in tweed to chase their pals wearing fox costumes to bars and pubs, where everyone had to down drinks.

Members of the University of York Tory Society organised the booze-up in memory of former president Sir Roger Scruton.

Writer and philosopher Sir Roger, who died in January, was a supporter of fox hunting. The event was described as “cruel” by some. Nick Weston, head of campaigns at the League Against Cruel Sports, said: “The reality is that foxes are still routinely being torn apart by fox hunt hounds and there’s nothing fun about that.

“This event will appal the vast majority of people by trivialising a brutal blood sport.”

Merry Dickinson, environment and ethics officer at the University of York Student Union, added: “Fox hunting as a ‘sport’ is premised upon the torture of the innocent.

“I cannot imagine why you would want to hold a social event based on that concept.”

A Facebook post by the group read: “In the unlikely event of confrontation, we ask that you ignore it and carry on enjoying your evening.”

The University of York Tory Society has been approached for comment.
