JUST LUKE Shaw: We’re motoring now with Ole at wheel

- ■ by JEREMY CROSS

LUKE SHAW is convinced that Manchester United are heading back to the top of English football.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are brimming with confidence following Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Goals from Anthony Martial and Scott Mctominay helped United complete their first Premier League double over City since 2010.

Solskjaer’s side have beaten City three times in league and cup this season and now find themselves on an unbeaten run of 10 games.

United are fifth in the table, firmly in the race to secure Champions League qualification, and are still in both the Europa League and FA Cup.

And left-back Shaw believes all the signs point towards United returning to greatness once more.

He said: “At the start under Ole, emotions got too much and I think we didn’t maintain that. I think this time we’re in a different sort of position.

“We’re more experienced with now as it was very disappointing the way we dropped off.

“We need to keep standards high. I’m sure the boss and the coaches around us will keep pushing, but also us as players need to push each other every day to get to where we want to be.

“We’re still in two cup competitions and the top four is still very much alive, so we’ve got to keep putting the pressure on.

“We’ve got to try not to focus too much on other it teams. We need to just focus on us and on our results and the confidence is so high.

“We’re shutting up shop again and keeping clean sheets, which is a very good positive, so we need to keep going.

“I have no doubt that we can finish off the season really strong.” Shaw, 24, believes putting City to the sword is a statement of intent.

He added: “I felt like we wanted it more. I’m very proud of the team and we need to keep focused now because we’re back in training and we’ve got a very big game on Thursday (away to LASK in the Europa League).” Shaw says the arrival of midfielder Bruno Fernandes (inset with Anthony Martial) from Sporting Lisbon has given the club a huge lift and helped make Old Trafford a happier place. He added: “Bruno’s been a brilliant signing so far. He’s already come in with a few assists and a few important goals. Long may that continue. “We will keep pushing the standards and we will keep pushing him because there’s so much more from him to come.

“The last few years the fans have had some very disappointing results against Manchester City at home. At home we’ve struggled.

“The fans were amazing and it helps us even more when they’re like that. “You just smile when you come off the pitch, the way they’re singing makes us all very happy.”
