Roy still at top of his game

- ■ by NEIL MCLEMAN

GARY CAHILL says Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson still has an incredible work ethic even at the age of 72.

The former England boss signed a new one-year contract at Selhurst Park last week and celebrated with a third consecutive win.

Defender Cahill said: “It is incredible the appetite for the game he has got, unbelievable at that age.

“He has been in the game for so long, in different countries, leagues and with national teams, so there is not much he probably hasn’t experienced.

“It is great for the lads that he has signed an extension. It is stability for the club and the players.

“His drive to still be involved and still be hungry to come in every single day is unbelievable, it is crazy. I’m not sure that will be me!”

Victory over Watford on Saturday means Palace are now up to 11th place and aiming for their best Premier League finish, which was 10th in 2015.

But Hodgson’s squad has been hit by injuries and the lack of transfer activity has caused tension.

“When you set targets, you make sure you’re safe,” added Cahill. “I hope this doesn’t bite me in the bum, but we’re pretty much there.

“Now we have to see how high we can finish, to better last season and better the records set in previous seasons.

“Next season? Hopefully we go into it with a fully-fit squad and maybe some additions and we’ll see where we go.”
