ONE GIANT LEAK FOR MANKIND!
Astronaut wee builds concrete
ASTRONAUT pee could be space stations on the Moon.
Scientists say urine can be mixed with lunar dust to create concrete and build bases which are suitable for human habitation.
It means settlers won’t have to transport heavy building materials from Earth. Instead, say researchers, “the idea is to use what is there” – including colonists’ wee. It costs at least £9,000 to transport a small bottle of water to the International
Space Station as it orbits the globe.
A return trip to the Moon would take much longer, and would need more rocket fuel and power.
Now European Space
Agency scientists say astronaut wee could make moon bases a reality.
Study author Professor
Ramon Pamies from the
Polytechnic University of
Cartagena in Spain said:
“To make the geopolymer concrete that will be used on the Moon, the idea is to use what is there.
“That is regolith, loose material from
Moon’s surface, and the the the used to build water from the ice present in some areas. But in this study we have seen that a waste product, such as the urine from the personnel who occupy the Moon bases, could also be used.”
The researchers used 3D printers to make mud tubes. They discovered that tubes printed using pee could bear heavy loads.
Co-author Anna-lena Kjoniksen, from Ostfold University in Norway, said: “The actual water in the urine could be used for the mixture, together with that which can be obtained on the Moon or a combination of both.”
