TURN-UP FOR THE BROOKS
David gets timely boost
BOURNEMOUTH star David Brooks admits he could be one of the few beneficiaries of Euro 2020 being put back a year.
The Welsh midfielder, 22, has been sidelined by an ankle injury since July and would have faced a race against the clock to prove his fitness to boss Ryan Giggs had the tournament gone ahead as planned.
Brooks said: “On a personal note, the Euros being postponed is not the worst thing for me. I have been out for eight months so it gives me plenty to time to get fit and raring to go.
“I have spoken to Ryan Giggs a few times and he has been interested to see how I have been getting on.
“But there is not much he can do as an international manager, he only sees me for a couple of weeks a year and only if I was fit.
“I was on a couple of the training camps and went to all the qualifying games to support the lads but apart from that I haven’t seen him, I have just spoken to him on the phone.”
Before the current crisis he was close to a comeback and could have featured for Eddie Howe’s Cherries against Wolves last weekend had the game been on.
Brooks said: “I was just starting to integrate back into the team. I was trying to get myself up to match speed.
“It has put a dampener on where I was at. I can do a bit of running but obviously kicking a football helps you get up to the standard required.”
Brooks says he is having to come up with novel ways to beat the boredom – including watching High School Musical and getting himself a dog.
He added: “I have downloaded Disney TV. The boredom kicked in and Netflix was starting to run dry.
“I have bought a dog, too, a little Teddy Bear Pomeranian called Bear.”
